Determine The Elements, Get Crafting

Maybe it happens around this time of life, around this age. Or maybe it’s just where my journey has led me, but as I approach another birthday I realize, that among other lofty things, this year has been about paying attention to what I need to be my best…..and actually listening. The actually listening part might have made the greatest difference.

For a healthy, happy, full, authentic me I’ve learned that need the following things:

Consistent sleep

Consistent yoga/meditation practice

To be surrounded by people who know and love me

To feel part of a community

Structure and routine

The freedom to break from that routine

A flexible schedule

A garden

To know that I can travel

Enough money to eat and play well

So then the puzzle then becomes, how do I make it all fit? How do I craft a lifestyle where all these elements can be at play? What priorities do I need to set? What are the important decisions I need to make right now?

When you start thinking in these terms a lot of the excess worry falls off. The stuff that doesn’t steer you towards your best self begins to suck up less of your attention and there’s more to give to the stuff that does. It all just becomes simpler. Identifying these elements and then crafting a life around making them happen is at the core of the work I do with my clients. Sometimes they know exactly what the elements are; sometimes they’re starting from scratch, putting in the work to figure out (or remember) what is authentic for them. But either way, we’re always moving towards healthy, happy and full.

  1. How wonderfully, simply put! I have almost the exact same “needs” you listed. I found out I needed routine after a hectic year or so of madness, but now too much structure and routine is driving me mad! I want to travel, but I want roots. I want a family, but I don’t want to be responsible for other people’s happiness. I want a life full of joy and excitement, but also rest and peace.

Peace and joy to you and thank you for this lovely little article ❤

  2. Thank you! Decisions just get easier when you have this clarity, don’t they?

  3. Yes they do! But the key, I think, is to constantly make those lists. The more frequently I check in with myself the more I notice that my inner landscape is ever changing. I am learning to be OK with that fact. I’ll never be exactly who I was yesterday, thus I must constantly learn about myself.
